The lifecycle of a bulb is quite magical, when you begin to learn a little bit more about it.
The flourish of its bloom in spring tends to be the part of the life cycle that gets the most attention. But actually, what happens beneath the surface of the soil is where the magic truly happens. Deep in the earth is where the inner-intelligence of the bulb is signalled. We plant bulbs in the fall, and they reach their roots down into the soils beneath them. Once the days begin to shorten, and temperatures drop, a little internal timer begins to track passing time. When the bulb has reached a certain amount of hours, a chemical reaction occurs from with that signals to the bulb to shift from dormancy into upward growth.
